Hundreds of Austin Teaching Jobs to be Cut

Hundreds of Austin teaching jobs could soon be eliminated.

Members of the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees voted earlier this week to approve a new payroll plan. On the up side, the plan will save about $26.5 million, but on the downside it will eliminate about 485 jobs.

Those layoffs will include about 334 elementary and secondary school teaching positions, 22 librarians, and several parent support roles. The district currently employs more than 12,000 workers. Learn more with this teacher job description.

According to the Austin Business Journal, the school district is currently facing a budget shortfall of $90 million to $113 million and had originally anticipated cutting 536 positions.

The layoffs are bad news for the local education industry, which so far has continued to recover nicely from the economic recession.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area's education and health services industry employed 87,900 workers during December, which is up from 87,800 workers during November and a 3.8 percent increase from last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Aside from the job cuts, the board also is considering closing nine school campuses in order to save even more money. Other measures would include furloughs, fewer paid leave days, and a merit-based pay system in place of performance bonuses.

Jobs in Austin Texas Created by Software Development Company

One software development company is create many jobs in Austin Texas.

Environmental Systems Corporation is looking to hire between 100 and 150 employees at the company's new office in Austin.

ESC is hiring employees in sales, engineering, software testing, and more at its recently-opened office at 7000 N. Mopac. The company chose Austin over several other cities.

ESC is a Tennessee-based environmental compliance software development company that helps organizations document and report clean air and environmental regulations compliance.

The company, which was founded 40 years ago, is a subsidiary of Churchill Industries. ESC's new jobs will help the Austin area continue it's recovery.

During August, the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area's unemployment rate decreased from 7.3 percent to 7.2 percent, keeping it well below the national average at the time of 9.6 percent.

The Austin area had a total non-farm employment of 769,200 workers during August, which is up from 765,400 workers during July and a 2.5 percent increase from last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
