Hundreds of Austin Teaching Jobs to be Cut
Hundreds of Austin teaching jobs could soon be eliminated.
Members of the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees voted earlier this week to approve a new payroll plan. On the up side, the plan will save about $26.5 million, but on the downside it will eliminate about 485 jobs.
Those layoffs will include about 334 elementary and secondary school teaching positions, 22 librarians, and several parent support roles. The district currently employs more than 12,000 workers. Learn more with this teacher job description.
According to the Austin Business Journal, the school district is currently facing a budget shortfall of $90 million to $113 million and had originally anticipated cutting 536 positions.
The layoffs are bad news for the local education industry, which so far has continued to recover nicely from the economic recession.
The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area's education and health services industry employed 87,900 workers during December, which is up from 87,800 workers during November and a 3.8 percent increase from last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Aside from the job cuts, the board also is considering closing nine school campuses in order to save even more money. Other measures would include furloughs, fewer paid leave days, and a merit-based pay system in place of performance bonuses.
