Miami Nursing Jobs are Bright Amid Dim Economy
Miami nursing jobs are continuing to do their part when it comes to economic recovery.
Healthcare is one of the few industries that has remained strong across the nation throughout the economic downturn. The constant need for medical professionals and the ever-aging population help keep this industry afloat regardless of the state of the economy.
The Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall area's education and health services industry employed 158,500 workers during August, which is down from 159,900 workers during July and a 1.9 percent increase from last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
As a whole, Florida has added 22,000 healthcare jobs in the past year, which makes up the majority of the 30,000 positions the state has added since 2009.
During that same time, the healthcare industry in Miami-Dade County grew by 2,100 jobs, while the overall employment market lost 1,400 workers.
These figures are consistent with the general consensus that nursing has overtaken construction as Florida's biggest growth industry. The growth of local medical schools also prove this point.
For instance, Dade Medical College has continued to expand during the recession, and saw a 50 percent increase in enrollment this year. That's partly attributable to a new school the college opened in Hollywood, according to an article by The Miami Herald.
